Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum

The Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum are split over two sites close to Oxford City Centre.

The Botanic Garden is situated in the centre of Oxford and is the oldest botanic garden in the UK. In total it houses over 5,000 different plant species, including more than 2,000 species living within the glasshouses alone.

Founded in 1621, the garden originally functioned as a ‘physic garden’ supporting medical studies and research at the University. Today it maintains its commitment to educating people about the importance of plants, conserving plants from around the world, and supporting research and teaching within the University and beyond.

Harcourt Arboretum is located just 5.5 miles outside the city centre, near Nuneham Courtenay. The site was acquired by the University of Oxford in 1947 and has been part of Oxford Botanic Garden since 1963.

Set within 130 acres of stunning and historic grounds, the site contains the finest collection of trees in Oxfordshire, including some of the world's rarest species.

Together the Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum are an incredible resource for research, education, conservation and inspiration for a new generation of botanists. We welcome everyone to come and visit, to share their passion and enjoy these two beautiful sites.
